Loss of Normalcy

SCENE 1

SETTING: A child’s bedroom, a bed with green sheets and a mural of the planets. Door on the left side of the stage. Toy soldiers on the ground in formation. There are rooms attached.

AT RISE: SHANE is sitting on the bed, facing the audience. SHANE is mumbling, and his mother AMY walks in through the door.

AMY

Shane, honey.

(SHANE talks louder.)

SHANE

I don’t want to.

AMY

What don’t you want to, sweety?

SHANE

I don’t want to go outside

AMY

(AMY gets closer to SHANE.)

Who told you that you have to go outside? Did your dad tell you that?

SHANE

No, Leroy told me I had to.

AMY

Well, you don’t have to go outside. No matter what-

(Pause.)

Leroy told you.

(Pause.)

Is he here with us?

SHANE

Yes.

AMY

Is there anyone else here?

SHANE

(Pauses and looks at his mother.)

Yes.

AMY

What are their names?

SHANE

They don’t have any. They just tell me to do things.

AMY

What kind of things?

SHANE

Bad things.

AMY

Like what?

SHANE

I’m not supposed to tell anyone. Very bad things.

SCENE 2

SETTING: Shane’s room leads to the living room through a hallway. The living room has an old TV, and old brown couches surround it.

AT RISE: AMY walks out of the bedroom. She goes into the living room, where DUSTIN, Shane’s dad, is sitting watching TV.

AMY

He’s doing it again.

DUSTIN

Which one is it now?

AMY

Many, not one. Telling him to do “bad things.”

DUSTIN

What kind of “bad things?”

AMY

That’s what I asked. He wouldn’t tell me. I think, it’s time.

DUSTIN

We promised we would wait.

AMY

I don’t think we can wait any longer. He’s no longer himself.

DUSTIN

He’s still a nice kid. Isn’t he?

AMY

But for how long? He is starting to act out. No playing with other kids, he locks himself in his room, and you have seen him when he gets mad. He screams, hits, and bangs his head into walls.

(Shane enters the living room through the hallway.)

SHANE

Mom, what’s wrong?

AMY

Nothing honey.

DUSTIN

Do you have any plans for today, bud?

SHANE

My friends and I are going to the park.

DUSTIN

See,

(He stares at AMY.)

He’s going out with friends.

AMY

(Rolls her eyes at DUSTIN and looks at SHANE.)

Which friends?

SHANE

The ones I told you about; the ones I hear.

DUSTIN

(Gets up from the couch.)

Okay, it’s time.

SHANE

Time for what, dad?

DUSTIN

Nothing, go back to your room. We are gonna go for a ride in the car later.

SHANE

We don’t want to go anywhere.

DUSTIN

Well we have to.

SHANE

No.

DUSTIN

Yes we are. We are your parents and your going to listen to us.

SHANE

NOOOO!!!

(He yells. SHANE runs at his father and starts hitting him with every part of his body. DUSTIN tries to restrain SHANE. SHANE bites DUSTIN.)

SHANE

NO, I won’t do it. Leroy STOP.

(He walks to a table with a drawer. He opens the drawer and picks up scissors. He charges at AMY and DUSTIN.)

SCENE 3

SETTING: A psychologist’s office.

AT RISE: Doctor REYNOLDS is sitting behind a desk. AMY and DUSTIN are sitting opposite to the doctor. SHANE is sitting and playing with toys in the corner.

REYNOLDS

We did a comprehensive psychological test on SHANE. Which covers many disorders. Just being with him for a couple of hours, I noticed some sizeable irregularities.

DUSTIN

What kind of irregularities?

REYNOLDS

I believe we are going to have to do some more testing, but it’s most likely a disorder we call Schizophrenia.

(SHANE looks at his parents, and they look back at him. A tear falls down AMY’S face.)
